Thoughts and quotes on courage and risk taking

By: Marjory Mejia

Have you witnessed a child’s spontaneity, play, and sense of wonder? It saddens me to see this dwindle in humans as we grow up. I can’t help but wonder how much we compromise our need for self expression and integrity for the fear of getting hurt. It takes much work to recover our authentic spark of life. How do we return to our original state in tune with the nature of life?

“For me, it’s been liberating to put myself in the mind of a fictitious six year-old each day, and rediscover my own curiosity. I’ve been amazed at how one ideas leads to others if I allow my mind to play and wander. A playful mind is inquisitive, and learning is fun. If you indulge your natural curiosity and retain a sense of fun in new experience, I think you’ll find it functions as a sort of shock absorber for the bumpy road ahead.” From Experience is food for the brain” by Bill Watterson

Here are some quotes to infuse us with courage to embrace life and most importantly, let it flow through us:

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” ~ Helen Keller

“Courage may be the most important of all virtues, because without [courage] you can’t practice any other virtue with consistency. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage.” ~ Maya Angelou

“It takes a great deal of courage to see the world in all its tainted glory, and still to love it.” ~ Oscar wilde

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” ~ Coco Chanel

“Creativity takes courage.” ~ Henry Matisse

“I’ve been absolutely terrified every moment of my life–and I’ve never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do.” ~ Georgia O’Keefe

Responsibility to yourself means that you don’t fall for shallow and easy solutions–predigested books and ideas…marrying early as an escape from real decisions, getting pregnant as an evasion of already existing problems. It means that you refuse to sell your talents and aspirations short…and this, in turn, means resisting the forces in society which say that women should be nice, play safe, have low professional expectations, drown in love and forget about work, live through others, and stay in the places assigned to us. It means that we insist on a life of meaningful work, insist that work be as meaningful as love and friendship in our lives. It means, therefore, the courage to be “different”…~ Adrienne Rich

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” ~ Lao Tzu

“Courage is grace under pressure.” ~ Ernest Hemingway

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” ~ André Gide

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”
~ E.E. Cummings

“Life shrinks and expands in proportion to one’s courage.” ~ Anais Nin

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the
things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
~ Mark Twain

“I want to think again of dangerous and noble things. I want to be light and frolicsome. I want to the improbable and beautiful and afraid of nothing as though I had wings.” ~Mary Oliver

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”     ~Nelson Mandela

“How could we forget those ancient myths that stand at the beginning of all races, the myths about dragons that at the last moment are transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage.”  ~ Rainer Maria Rilke

Dear ones, may our experiences be rich and deeply satisfying. And may we have the courage to be different, own our truth, leap and make space to play and grow together and learn from each other.
