Feed your fire. Alchemy in the kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home, a space of alchemy, transformation and magic, where we work with the ancestral element of fire. Here we witness the metamorphosis of ingredients turning into unique concoctions. Growing up in Peru, the kitchen was a communal place in the home, a space of storytelling, where different flavors mingled to express themselves. Native and Spanish as well as other cuisines influenced the exquisite mélange that is the earthy comida criolla of Peru.

I come from a lineage of women who made and continue to make magic in the kitchen. It is therefore natural for me to see the ancestral space of the kitchen endowed with a special kind of magic: love. Like books, food made with love has the power to melt the frozen seas inside us. The intention that sustains soulful cooking and eating is not meant to numb our soul, but nourish our life force so we can grow more awake, conscious, and alive.

A sacred space of alchemy

In these times of always feeling rushed, the kitchen invites us to slow down, be present, connect and enter the meditative and sacred art of cooking. The kitchen is the one space in the home where our hands are in direct contact with the fruits of the earth, fruits that were touched by sun, soil, air and water, as well as the invisible hands that planted and harvested our food.  When I let my creative juices run wild in the kitchen, I enter a state of flow. Our mind naturally quiets in the kitchen because its environment engages all of our senses: seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling and touching. For a delightful exploration of the senses, read  A Natural History of the Senses by Diane Ackerman.

If you want increased vitality in your life, spend some time in the kitchen. It will feed your fire. Here we are not only speaking of fire in a figurative way—to mean passion—we are essentially working with fire in a sensory, sensual, visceral way.

Create a well-functioning, vibrant, and invigorating kitchen that speaks to your soul and invites flow. Eliminate toxins in your kitchen, grow your own aromatic herbs and/or produce if you have a garden, go to farmer’s markets, recycle, compost, waste less, buy organic, go wholesome!

Only a few subtle changes to the design of your kitchen can shift its energy and invigorate its soul. Invite natural materials, color, light, patterns, views, art, plants & flowers. Keep it spacious and flowing. Here are some examples of kitchens with soul:

May you feed your fire and experience magic in the kitchen!

My birthday is tomorrow! I dedicate this post to the great Spirit that gives us life, to  my beloved ancestors and ancestral land, my loved ones who support my path, to all beings who have generously fed my body, mind, and spirit along the journey of my life. To love, the most powerful, healing current in the universe. And to all of you, beautiful alchemists,

The sensual spiritual bathroom

feminine space

The bathroom can be the most neglected space in the house, evoking feelings of guilt, shame or plain fear. We often respond to this triggered emotions by over sanitizing this space; making it cold, sterile, bare, silenced, desacralized. Our dwellings seem to hide the bathroom or seek to subdue its design as we disconnect from body and soul. This is a call to celebrate the bathroom as a a place of flow, communion, transformation, self-care and well being for our sensual, spiritual selves.

A prayer for the liberation of woman, earth, life

“Make no mistake about it–enlightenment is a destructive process. It has nothing to do with becoming better or being happier. Enlightenment is the crumbling away of untruth. It’s seeing through the facade of pretense. It’s the complete eradication of everything we imagined to be true.” ~ Adyashanti Here are your some of our wounds, some…

Riding waves in a magical, real world

There is a kind of magic that is born from the soil of experience, the magic of the mundane if you will, which under the light of awareness, shines sacred. I wonder if some of us are wired to experience life in a magical realist way. Asi parece. Magical realism is not just a literary genre; it is a way of living, of perceiving life, of engaging the world..

In the belly of this wild, sacred dance

We have come to be danced…
…the claw our way back into the belly

the unhinged, unplugged, cat is out of its box dance…

Feminine flow, unfurling through space

I love the sinuous, kinetic, serpentine, swirling, spiraling movements of these beings expressing fluidity. The last one is a woman, a Goddess-like artist able to beautifully embody and transmit this sacred quality, this feminine flow vibrating between the auditory, visual, and tactile dimensions as She unfurls through space.   The work I do is extremely…

What you can plan is too small for you

As guests of this wise Earth, I pray that we wake up to her beauty and love. The world trembles for our presence. And while there are people already planning the new year, I am opening up in sweet surrender. What to do when you get an amazing gift? Surrender. Open to it. What to do when you get a difficult teaching? Breathe through it, surrender and be kind to yourself and others. I am learning this a little more every day.

A feast of flow and feminine space in the Amazon

Vibrating to the rhythm of a sacred land, I arrived home. Shaken into the space of my heart until I could see my whole life shining through the prism of love. I now understand the meaning of these words: In search of my mother’s garden. And my grandmother’s and so on… a labor of love….

Epiphanies. Space Revelations along our path

“An epiphany: when the veil is pulled back.” ~ John O’Donohue

I love epiphanies. Sensory bursts of revelation, inspiration, and realization. Epiphanies are manifestations of one’s truest self, aha moments that fill you with wonder, realizations that sink their teeth deep into the substance of our lives…

The art of Intimacy

“Millions of people are suffering: they want to be loved but they don’t know how to love. And love cannot exist as a monologue; it is a dialogue, a very harmonious dialogue.” ~ Osho

Indeed, we thrive when we experience a dialogue with all life. This dialogue is an exchange, enlivened by intimacy, the kind that fills you with trust, curiosity and real engagement. A certain intimacy with the objects that surrounds us, the people we come into contact with, the art we create, the gifts we explore and the spaces we inhabit.
